Rookie quarterback Daniel Jones has had a great training camp and impressed in the Giants’ preseason opener, leading some to wonder if he’s going to push starter Eli Manning for playing time sooner than expected.
New York Giants owner John Mara hopes that doesn’t happen this year.
“I hope Eli has a great year and Daniel never sees the field,” Mara told reporters Tuesday when asked about the team’s quarterback situation. “That would be an ideal world where you would like to see that. Again, at the end of the day it’s going to be the decision by the head coach [Pat Shurmur] as to when or if Daniel ends up playing this year.”
The 38-year-old Manning is set to open the season as the starter, but Jones has turned heads thus far. He completed all five of his passes for 67 yards and a touchdown in his NFL preseason debut against the Jets Thursday night.
