The Red Devils are in desperate need of defensive reinforcements this summer after a poor season at Old Trafford.
Solskjaer is set to overhaul his squad in the coming months but one player who won’t be joining is Ajax hero De Ligt.
According to Balague, United had registered a serious interest in the 19-year-old.
However, the club’s sixth-place finish in the Premier League and subsequent lack of Champions League football means De Ligt will be moving elsewhere.
“The interest from United cooled down because of the cost and there wasn’t much reciprocation of love from De Ligt because they are not in the Champions League next season,” Balague said on his YouTube channel.
“That was taken out of the list quite a long time ago.
“In the case of Liverpool, they showed an interest 18 months ago and they found out all the information they needed from him but that has not moved on.
“They know what Ajax want and they knew at the time De Ligt wanted in wages.
“To be honest, that figure has changed. Mina Raiola has realised the stock of his client has increased and now he can get more money.”
However, even if United has finished in the top four, there is no guarantee De Ligt would have chosen a move to the Red Devils.
This is because Barcelona, Juventus, Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Manchester City are all also in the hunt for the youngster.
“He’s [worth] €60m, that’s all Ajax will ask for,” Balague continued.
“In that period in theist 18 months you’ve had teams like Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United enquiring about his services.
“They are trying to find out exactly what the situation is and what his personal demands are.
“And of course the list has included the likes of Barcelona, Juventus and Bayern Munich.”
