Rafael Nadal closed the gap on Roger Federer’s Grand Slam record with a five-set victory over Daniil Medvedev at the US Open in the early hours of he morning.
Nadal has now won 19 slams to Federer’s 20 after seeing off a battling Medvedev at Flushing Meadows.
Nadal was taken into a fifth set despite winning the first two and eventually won the match 7-5 6-3 5-7 4-6 6-4.
The Spaniard pocketed the $3,850,000 (£3.14m) for winning his fourth US Open, but where does that take his career earnings?
Nadal has now earned $11,926,883 (£9,727,386.87) in 2019 and a stunning total of $115,178,858 (£93,920,872.07) over his career.
And those figures will be heavily increased through personal endorsements and commercial deals.
Nadal works with the likes of Nike, Kia, Emporio Armani, Babolat, Telefonica, Banco Sabadell, Tommy Hilfiger.
However Nadal may now take his foot off the pedal for the rest of the year with his wedding schedule for October 19.
Nadal will marry Xisca Perello in Puerto Pollensa. He is likely to still take part in the Laver Cup and in Beijing, but may miss Shanghai and Basel with Paris then the only event before the ATP Tour Finals in London at the end of the season.
Nadal has won two of the four slams this term – the US and the French – equalling Novak Djokovic who won the other two.
Djokovic however is likely to remain world No 1 until the end of the year.
Nadal though is happy with his performance in New York.
“In some way that’s good [to] see all the things I went through. Being able to still be here is so special for me,” Nadal said.
“I went through some tough moments, physically especially. When you have physical issues, then mentally things became much more difficult.
“The emotions were there watching all the success, all the moments… I tried to hold the emotion, but at some moments it was impossible. I’m just very happy. This trophy means everything to me today.”
