As England fast bowler Steve Harmison will attest, there is nothing quite like the anticipation that comes before the first day of a new Ashes series.

A nervous Harmison famously sent a loosener to second slip with the opening ball in the 2006 series and the man facing that day was Justin Langer, who is now the Australian team’s coach.

Langer would be only too happy to remind his team that wayward opening ball set the tone for a woeful series for the English, who went on to lose 5-0. First days matter.

But after a build-up clouded by off-field drama – with Tim Paine’s exit and a racism scandal in English county cricket – both Australia and England will just be keen to get onto the Gabba and get down to business.
