Paul Farbrace is favourite to take over at Middlesex after Stuart Law was sacked as head coach with a quarter of his four-year contract remaining.

Farbrace is director of cricket at county champions Warwickshire but is understood to be keen to return to a more hands-on coaching role.

Since quitting as Trevor Bayliss’s No2 with England to move to Edgbaston in 2019, Farbrace, 54, has operated to a wider brief.

He spoke to Middlesex before Law was appointed three winters ago, having spent six seasons as a player with the club during the 1990s.

Law’s removal is the second coaching change during Andrew Cornish’s short tenure as chief executive.

In July, Angus Fraser was moved aside as director of cricket to an academy and age-group role, leaving Law solely accountable for first-team results.
