McDonald is part of a new breed of Australian coaches coming through the ranks who has been keenly sought after in international circles.
The all-rounder, who retired in 2016 after four Tests and a long career with Victoria, was announced as the coach of Indian Premier League franchise Rajasthan Royals just last week.
He was also unveiled as coach of Birmingham Phoenix in England's new Hundred competition.
While it will be a career progression for McDonald, it is a blow for Cricket Victoria, as he is not only the coach of the men's state side but also at the helm of the Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League.
McDonald had replaced David Saker, who took up a position with former national coach Darren Lehmann's staff.
McDonald became the first coach to claim the domestic treble last year, leading Victoria to success in the Sheffield Shield and the one-day tournament and the Renegades in the BBL.
