‘Nice if he gets injured for a long time’: Indian star KL Rahul slammed for Warner joke

David Warner is in a race to be fit for the Test series starting on December 17 after his groin injury suffered in the second ODI against India on Saturday.

Warner scored 83 of Australia’s 4/389 but just four overs into fielding, he was injured in a rather innocuous dive to save a single.

Warner was in clear discomfort and was taken to hospital for scans.

Earlier today he was ruled out of the remaining ODI on Wednesday and the three-match T20 series while he is also racing the clock to get fit before the first Test in Adelaide starting December 17.

Warner has been replaced by West Australian batsman D’Arcy Short, who was on standby and training with the national squad.

Pat Cummins is also being rested with Aussie coach Justin Langer reiterating the pair were part of Australia's Test plans.

“Pat and Davie are critical to our plans for the Test Series,” he said.

“Davie will work through his injury rehab and in Pat’s case it is important all of our players are managed well to keep them mentally and physically fit throughout what is a challenging summer.

“The priority for both is being fully prepared for one of the biggest and most important home Test Series we have played in recent years, especially with World Test Championship points up for grabs.”

But Indian players were glad to see the back of Warner, with KL Rahul cheeky remark being panned on social media.

“I don’t know how bad his injury is but it’d be nice if he gets injured for a long time,” Rahul quipped.

“I wouldn’t wish that for any cricketer. But he’s one of their main batsmen, so if he’s injured for a long time it’d be good for our team.”

India have had a tough start to the series against Australia with two thumping losses but some fans on social media took aim at the comments from Rahul.

His comments were labelled as “despicable”, “terrible”, “idiotic” and “arrogant” by those on social media.

Warner probably wouldn’t take it too personally either posting a picture and a video to his Instagram Stories with the caption “someone was happy when she noticed daddy was home this morning”.

Since the injury, questions have been raised about who will take Warner’s position in the batting order, with Marnus Labuschagne putting his hand up for the white-ball games.

“Certainly if I got asked to open the batting absolutely it’s an opportunity that I would enjoy doing. We’ll wait and see how our team shapes up for the next game and see the balance of the side, but yeah I would love doing it,” Labuschagne said.
