Pucovski “really ready” if selectors come calling

Will Pucovski has no regrets about stepping away from cricket last summer when he was on the verge of Test selection and has come back “really ready” to handle the expectation that comes with being one of the game’s next big things.

The Victorian batting dynamo finally gets back in the middle for Victoria on Friday against South Australia after a long off-season which included hard quarantine in Adelaide where the players felt “like criminals in a way” as they trained under the watchful eyes of local police.

It was another strange episode in the short career of Pucovski which has included numerous concussions and a lingering mental wellbeing issue which twiced forced the rising star to step away from the game.

Pucovski, now 22, would have worn a baggy green last summer before he took a break on the eve of the Test summer and didn’t return until February this year.

But having taken a “holistic” approach to improving himself on and off-field Pucovski has declared he’s “really keen” to get back on the Test radar and step up if called upon.

“I have done a lot of work in the last year to get me that little bit further down the line and I feel like I am in a really good space now which is awesome, just in everyday life and with my cricket,” Pucovski said on Wednesday.

“It’s been an interesting year or two and it’s hard for people to understand, but I am very happy with where I am at and most of the people who matter to me and happy with where I’m at.

“I don’t have much control over whether (selectors) pick me but I am definitely very keen (to play Test cricket). It’s been a dream of mine since I can remember.”

Pucovski conceded he “wasn’t quite ready” for Test cricket last year. But the elegant right-hander is adamant that three summers of exposure to the ups and downs of playing amid great expectations has been invaluable experience and only helped his current cause.

“It’; been a bit of journey … but the older you get and th emore experience you gain you get used to situations and understand how the world works a bit more and I feel really comfortable within myself now more than I did last year and more than the year before that,” he said,

“I’ve always been a believed that things happen for a reason and my journey has taken a particular path and I think it will all work out for the best in the end. I

“I’ve never stopped believing that. In that sense it has been, easy is not the right word, but living knowing that will be the case has made things a lot easier. You learn how to deal with different things and different pressures.”

“I’m definitely in a good space to handle all that. feel like I am really ready because I put that much work in to make sure I am in a good space.”

Pucovski has also signed his first ever BBL contract with the Melbourne Stars, in order to spend a full summer in a professional environment.
