Spin bowler Sam Bates has achieved the rare feat of claiming Player of the Match honours for bowling one over during the Sydney Thunder’s rain-affected victory over the Brisbane Heat in Sydney.
Restricted to chasing 45 runs from five overs following a DLS Method adjustment, the Heat crumbled to 7/30 at Sydney Showground to register their first defeat of the season.
The Thunder’s spin bowlers took advantage of the slow wicket by taking pace off the ball, and the Heat’s batters struggled to adjust to the flight and inconsistent bounce.
Bates claimed two wickets and leaked zero runs in her single over during the run chase, while English international Heather Knight snared three scalps in her six-ball spell.
“I was pretty nervous out there actually,” Bates said after the victory.
“I had an injury during the off-season, and I could only bowl probably two overs a week for quite a long time.
“That really helped me today … my plan was quite clear, I knew exactly what I wanted to do, and it was fortunate enough that I executed it.”

Opening batter Jess Jonassen was the only Brisbane player to reach double-figures, her 14 coming off nine balls.
Earlier, Rachel Trenaman and Tammy Beaumont combined for a 71-run opening partnership to put the Thunder in a commanding position.
The Sydney-based team reached 3/80 before rain interrupted their innings in the 13th over. The Thunder remain undefeated in WBBL06 after four rain-affected fixtures.
