Virate Kohli’s wife slams legend after misquote

Bollywood superstar Anushka Sharma has hit out at Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar after referencing her while discussing husband Virat Kohli in commentary.

Sharma starred in a dozen hit films and built a successful career before marrying the Indian cricket captain, but is regularly harassed online by fans whenever her partner fails with the bat.

Kohli’s latest outing was one to forget, as his Royal Challengers Bangalore crashed to a 97-run defeat to Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League on Thursday.

He dropped two catches off KL Rahul, allowing his national teammate to cruise to a record-breaking century, while Kohli was dismissed for one run during the chase. He was also later fined AU$23,000 for his team’s slow over rate.

Gavaskar was commentating on the match, and the celebrated former skipper said it was clear Kohli did not get enough proper practice ahead of the T20 tournament.

He referred to a recent viral video which showed Sharma bowling to Kohli on their apartment terrace in Mumbai while the city’s residents were stuck at home at the height of the coronavirus pandemic.

“During the recent lockdown he (Kohli) only practised against Anushka’s bowling … But that is not going to be enough,” Gavaskar said.

Sharma responded with a lengthy Instagram post, slamming Gavaskar for his “distasteful” comment.

“I would love for you to explain why you thought of making such a sweeping statement” the 32-year-old wrote.

“It’s 2020 and things still don’t change for me. When will I stop getting dragged into cricket.”

Twitter lit up over the incident with furious fans calling for Gavaskar to be sacked from commentary, while others sent messages of support of the commentator.

However, Gavaskar’s remarks were grossly misquoted by several media outlets, with the incorrect comments circulating around social media. He was initially accused of saying that during lockdown Kohli had practised only with Anushka’s “balls”, which originated from an incorrect Hindi translation.

In actuality, Gavaskar had not made an indecent remark, nor blamed the actor for her husband’s performance in the IPL.

Speaking to India Today, Gavaskar responded to his critics: “Firstly, I would like to say, where am I blaming her, I’m not blaming her. I am only saying that the video showed she was bowling to Virat. Virat has only played that much bowling in this lockdown period.

“It is a tennis ball fun game that people have to pass time during the lockdown, so that’s all, so where am I blaming her for Virat’s failures.”
