Let’s be totally honest about the impending 2018-19 college basketball season: If there was a significant player on a great team a year ago, he either exhausted his eligibility or chose not to spend what he had left of it.
Our preseason All-America team could have included such players as Jacob Evans, Moritz Wagner, Kevin Huerter and, of course, Donte DiVincenzo. But they all entered the 2018 NBA Draft as underclassmen and became first-round picks, so no one’s suggesting they departed in error. They just made the job of choosing this team a heck of a lot harder.

Several gifted players return to teams that did not achieve great success last season but nonetheless appear positioned to return to the NCAA Tournament. There are some who played smaller roles on terrific teams who should blossom with greater opportunity this time around.
And there are a few freshman — mostly at Duke — who could become instant stars.
