Ex boxing star Butterbean wanted one last fight against Jake Paul or Mike Tyson

Eric Scott Esch, better known by his nickname Butterbean, may be officially retired from the sport of boxing, but he has previously said he is prepared to get back into the ring against Jake Paul.

He says the YouTuber turned professional boxer “runs his mouth too much,” and he’s relishing a chance to go toe to toe with him.

Butterbean also has one of the sport’s most ferocious fighters in his sights – Mike Tyson.

The boxer previously turned down the chance to fight him due to being in a “dark place” at the time, but he has since said he is ready and willing.

The 56-year-old is still going strong and has a loyal entourage of supporters that would give anything to see the heavyweight get back into the ring.

He’s quite a character, and here’s everything you need to know about him before a potential retirement-ending bout.

Who is Butterbean?

Butterbean is a former professional boxer who at his prime was one of the most well-known in the world for his sport.

His career only started by chance during the 1990s, when he worked as a manufacturer in Alabama.

A colleague of his dared Butterbean to enter a Toughman contest which he ended up winning.

However, he weighed over 400 pounds, which was prohibited by the competition.

As a result, he went on a strict diet that mostly consisted of chicken and butterbeans.

It was this diet that gave him his now iconic nickname.

It wasn’t long before he stated to make a name for himself in the sport, with the boxing world putting him on national TV very early on.

He won his first 15 fights in the ring before losing to Mitchell Rose at Madison Square Garden in 1995.

His career eventually came to a close in 2013, after years of success in the sport.

Butterbean raised his stardom through appearances at events such as WWE WrestleMania, which he starred at only once.

He also made regular appearances on The Tonight Show over the years, along with other reality TV show such as Hulk Hogan’s Celebrity Championship Wrestling and Big Law: Deputy Butterbean.

In 2002, he entered cult-icon status when he made an appearance in Jackass: The Movie alongside Johnny Knoxville and the rest of the outlandish gang.

Who will Butterbean fight next?

When Butterbean was in his prime, he always dreamed of fighting Mike Tyson.

In 2020, following Mike Tyson’s shock return to the sport, Butterbean was offered a chance to finally fight the legend.

Sadly, he had to turn it down, due to him battling depression at the time.

However, in 2022, he has been training again under ex-WWE star Diamond Dallas Page, and said in June he was finally ready to take on the champion.

In an interview with SunSport, he said: "I was in that dark place. There was no way it was possible.

“I’m alive right now, I’m good to go. And Mike is in great shape, it would be a hell of a fight.

“We’d both come to fight, Mike ain’t going to run from me. That’s where his big mistake would be.

“I sparred Buster Mathis a lot, so I know Tyson’s style.”

He also took aim at Jake Paul, the brother of YouTuber Logan Paul and social media star.

Jake has been making a name for himself in boxing, and he has also gained a reputation for calling out other champions.

Butterbean has taken issue with this, saying: “I’m not a typical boxer, I go out there to fight, I want to knock somebody out. Jake Paul or Mike Tyson.

“Jake Paul runs his mouth too much, he’s never fought nobody, I would love to fight him.

“But I think people would like to see me and Tyson go at it, which would be a hell of a draw."

How much is Butterbean worth?

Butterbean has an estimated net worth of $500 million (£430 million), according to celebritynetworth.com.

Most of his net worth comes from his former boxing days, though he also earns a lot through TV deals and appearances.

If he steps into the ring again, it would likely see his net worth skyrocket as a result.
