Jake and Logan Paul slammed for ‘conning the boxing public’ by former champion

Former heavyweight champion Tim Witherspoon has accused YouTubers Logan and Jake Paul of "conning the boxing public" with their respective professional careers in the sport.

Both brothers have fought in professionally sanctioned boxing bouts, with Logan the first to do so by taking on British social media star KSI in 2019.

Jake's professional debut came in January the following year against another YouTuber AnEsonGib, but has since taken his boxing more seriously with bouts against basketballer Nate Robinson and MMA fighters Ben Askren and Tyron Woodley.

The younger brother won all four of those bouts and will take on a bona fide boxer for the first time when he steps into the ring with Tommy Fury next month.

While their fights have been professionally sanctioned, not everyone believes it is fair for those with large followings to enter the sport in the way they have.

One of those is Witherspoon, who believes their presence on the pro boxing scene is disrespectful to all those who have had to work so much harder to be in the same position.

"I think they should separate that type of entertainment so everybody knows it’s only exhibitions," he told The Sun. "It's a shame that those two brothers are running up there and disrespecting boxers who have really worked hard.

"You know what, there is nobody who is in the top ten current ranking that these brothers are fighting, those brothers know what they’re doing they’re trying to get top guys on TV who are no longer in their peak or non boxers."

While Jake Paul's meeting with Tyson Fury's younger brother is confirmed, Logan is rumoured to be targeting a meeting with heavyweight legend Mike Tyson in the future.

Witherspoon, who famously beat British boxing legend Frank Bruno in their 1986 WBA title fight, laughed off any suggestion that Paul could lay a significant glove on 'The Baddest Man on the Planet'.

"The majority of the people know that they're not going to win against a top ten ranked real boxer. Mike Tyson will kill [Logan]," the 63-year-old continued.

"He's not going to be able to do anything to Mike. Mike's going to kill him. Mike might not even hurt him – Mike might get in there and play with him. So it's not real serious stuff. And the commission allowed this stuff.

"The Paul brothers should be made to fight guys in the top ten, the Logans won’t even win. They're conning the boxing public and community and I think it's a shame.

"There's no way these brothers can really beat the top boxers in a real match. So, they're misleading a lot of the boxing community – they're not real boxers."
