Three boxers from London Olympic Qualifier test positive for COVID-19

A third boxer has tested positive for COVID-19 after competing in this month’s European Olympic qualifying event in London.

Croatian heavyweight Toni Filipi revealed yesterday that he had joined Turkish middleweight Serhat Guler and a second unnamed Turk in contracting the virus.

In addition the two nations claim three of their coaches also have the disease. No British boxers are affected.

The tournament started after most other sports events had been shut down due to the growing pandemic.

Following day one competition was moved behind closed doors. At the end of day three it was postponed.

Eyup Gozgec, president of the Turkish boxing federation, slammed the decision to even start the event.

He raged: "This is the disastrous result of the irresponsibility of the IOC Boxing Task Force (BTF). I just want to know, when the whole world was on high alert, why they hosted this event?

"We didn't see any hygienic standards there. There were no preventative measures.”

In a statement the IOC said: "The BTF is not aware of any link between the competition and the infection.”

A spokesperson for the Local Organising Committee added: “Extensive measures were put in place to protect the health and welfare of participants during the competition.

“Our medical team was in daily contact with Public Health England throughout the tournament and provided regular guidance to all of the teams (that participated in the competition) which reflected the Government’s advice.

“In addition to this, a range of extra measures were put in place to support teams which included the provision of hand sanitisers throughout the competition, spaces and the introduction of routine temperature tests as part of the daily medicals for competing boxers.

“Teams were advised on the steps they should take if any members of their delegation showed symptoms of the virus. During the competition there were no recorded instances of teams contacting the medical team to report symptoms.”

Filipi says he now feels “good” and there is “no fear”, despite only yesterday receiving conformation that he is positive.
