Bargain buy Champagne Dreams ready to make impression in Dequetteville Stakes at Morphettville

Past good fortune with progeny of Reward For Effort helped Glen Kent uncover a bargain buy from the sires progeny at the sales last year and the filly has continued to impress her trainer ever since.

Kent, who trains with Wayne Francis, was scoping the catalogue at the Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sales when a bay by the 2009 Blue Diamond winner caught his eye.

“I was talking to one of the guys from Chatswood Stud who asked me if I was going to check the Reward For Efforts and I told him there was only one I liked,” Kent said.

“He pulled out what he thought were the best ones but I said you haven’t brought out the one I like.

“She was a bit of a backward filly but those are the sort of horse I like because you can improve it.

“And when she came home she just kept improving.”

Kent paid a modest $15,000 for the filly and she became known as Champagne Dreams.

And it didn’t take her long to make an impression on the track.

Champagne Dreams was a superb winner at her first visit to the races last month when leading all the way to score by 2-1/4 lengths in a 1000m scamper at Morphettville.

“We have always known she was forward enough and that she can gallop but you are never confident the first start at the races,” Kent said.

“Some handle it, but sometimes it’s too much and you don’t know until about third up when they have race experience what you have got.

“In her case though she has been the ultimate professional and we were very happy to get the result.”

On Saturday, Champagne Dreams will look to take another step forward when the filly lines up in the $107,250 Listed Dequetteville Stakes (1050m) at Morphettville.

Kent believes his unbeaten juvenile will give a good account of herself again with jockey Kayla Crowther in the saddle for the two-year-old feature.

“She has got plenty of improvement left in her,” Kent said.

“What she is doing now, she is doing it all on her own.

“Kayla has ridden her in her gallops and she is happy with her so hopefully she can run well again.

“We are pretty confident our filly should be there or thereabouts.”

Champagne Dreams is on the third line of betting with TAB.com.au at $5 with Godolphin duo Translation ($3.10) and Cloudy ($4.60) fighting for favouritism.
