THE decision to turn their backs on the breeding barn continues to reap the rewards for connections of smart mare Lady Silhouette after her second successive $50,000 Gawler Cup (1600m) on Friday night.
It’s was a huge home town win for an emotional local horseman Gary Searle after the eight-year-old proved too good for rivals with a dominant 1.3 length win.
Searle is always a force to be reckoned with on his home track but was thinking it might not be his day after failing to register a placing from seven runners prior to the feature before Lady Silhouette enhanced her amazing record on track, the win her seventh from 14 starts at Gawler.
“We haven’t had a lot of luck during the day but the old girl, well,’ Searle said.
“We tried to sell her as a broodmare and got offered $8000. I said to the boys “she’ll win more than that.
Could the Cox Plate be Winx’s last race?0:00
Horse Racing: Champion mare Winx could take home a record fourth Cox Plate on Saturday, but could it be her last race?
“She’s sound and we’ll keep going with her and that’s what she’s doing,’’ he said.
Searle said winning his home town Cup for a second successive year was a great feeling.
“To win your home town cup anywhere is special, and obviously to do it back to back with the old girl, who’s to say she can’t come back next year,’’ Searle added.
“We’ll look after and it may happen it again,’’ he said.
Lady Silhouette enjoyed a gun run behind a good speed for jockey Emily Finnegan before peeling deep on the corner where she quickly joined in and held off a fast finishing Sizzling Bullet with Arkham Knight running into third.
It continued a good run for the former top apprentice after winning the Listed Durbridge Stakes at Morphettville earlier in the month aboard Casino Wizard while continuing a strong association with the Searle stable.
