Improving weather has brought the track into the soft range at the Sunshine Coast and with the rail out three metres riders will shift to the crown of the straight to find the better going.
The big track gives all horses their chance but these Sunday meetings are fraught with danger and with value hard to find I will be playing with caution.
Race 1- QTIS Fillies 2YO Maiden Handicap 1000m
Many first starters make this difficult to assess. VIENNA EXPRESS (2) ran bold races in both the Prelude and Jewel. She was scratched from Saturday to target this and from gate two will get all the favours. With a fitness edge on all other runners she will be hardest to beat.
INVISIBLE TEARS (1) performed well at both outings before a break and has trialled soundly at the Gold Coast. She is a promising type which will improve over longer but the big track will suit and can show up fresh for Michael Cahill.
COME CLEAN (17) is resuming and wasn’t disgraced at her Gold Coast debut over 900m. She has had a jumpout and can make her presence felt with Baylee Nothdurft from gate one.
BULLOO (5) is trained here by Stuart Kendrick and has looked sharp at jumpouts. He is poorly drawn but from an astute local stable and can debut well for Ryan Maloney.
EXTREMIST (6) trialled soundly, is well-drawn and Rob Heathcote can get them ready first-up.
AMERICAN RUBY (4) has shown promise at trials and Michael Rodd strikes well for Bryan and Daniel Guy.
Betting Strategy: VIENNA EMPRESS (2) is placed to break through and I will have two units to win.
Race 2- QTIS Colts and Geldings 2YO Maiden Handicap 1000m
Very few of these have raced and those that have are resuming.
Natalie Mccall scratched BLOOD THUNDER (1) from Saturday for this and this is the trainer’s happy hunting ground. BLOOD THUNDER (1) won a trial, is well drawn and Ben Thompson rides. All factors augur towards a good debut.
LE FORCE (15) is locally trained by Daryl Hansen and resumes after showing promise at his first preparation. The stable can get them ready first-up and Robbie Fradd takes the mount. Watch for support.
Of Tony Gollan’s three runners DEVASTATING (5) had a quiet trial but is bred for speed, has gate one and Ryan Maloney; TIGER HEART (10) wasn’t seen at the trials but had jumpouts and his dam was a smart racemare; REFERO (8) did not show up at his trial but is well-bred. Take your pick.
Betting Strategy: Too hard for me
Race 3 – Maiden Handicap 1000m
Plenty of these have convictions but I AM SUMI (3) placed at four of six starts here last preparation. Trained locally by Allan Jones and with Steph Lacy to ride she will be ready to go first-up.
The Natalie Mccall-trained HANGRY (10) showed speed at debut on a heavy track and will appreciate a firmer surface. She will strip fitter and can improve from a good gate with Tiff Brooker to ride.
TALLAHASSEE LASSIE (12) fought hard behind Curvetta over this trip when resuming and Jaden Lloyd 1.5kg claim helps. She was scratched from the Gold Coast, has found a moderate field and will get a good run throughout.
SPILL QUEEN (9) resumes after a change of stables. She wasn’t far away at her four earlier outings which included a narrow defeat at Doomben over 1350m. Luke Tarrant rides and she could sprint well fresh.
KURU LASS (11) placed when resuming behind a handy one in Still Reigning and can improve.
Betting Strategy: An average lot. No bet
Race 4- QTIS Three-Year-Old 0-62 Handicap 1400m
Garnett Taylor has found the right race for BACK WHEN (1) which has been running in stronger races than this, placing second to Georgie’s Pride in Saturday company two starts back and following up with a sixth to Abracadazzle after being caught wide throughout. He will find this much easier and with Ronnie Stewart should be too good.
DRIZZLE (4) was too strong in a moderate Maiden over 1200m at Doomben on a heavy track when having first start for Barry Lockwood. Michael Rodd stays on and from the good gate will get every chance.
ZOU ZOU KACANARKIS (5) is backing up quickly after being runner-up at Doomben on Monday but loves a heavy track and his only win was at this trip.
Betting Strategy: Expecting BACK WHEN (1) to be at prohibitive odds so no bet
Race 5 – Benchmark 68 Handicap 1400m
SPARTAN JET (4) has been up a while but rarely runs poorly and ran third to a handy pair in Foreign Territory and Rebel Salute last start in a Class 4 here over 1400m. He can be slowly away but with Madeleine Wishart’s claim he drops 3kg and if he jumps well from gate one will get all the favours.
WOWSERS (3) has had two outings since resuming and struggled on the very heavy Gold Coast track last start. Now third-up he is reaching peak fitness and has been runner-up at his past two outings over this trip. A firmer track will suit and he can improve.
THE DRILLER (2) hasn’t been able to break through this preparation but is rarely far away. He will get a good run with Michael Cahill and can be in the finish.
METSON (1) has been racing in stronger company and will appreciate this class and distance. He rises 6kg but is fitter for three outings and with Baylee Nothdurft can improve on his home track.
Betting Strategy: An even race with value hard to find. No bet.
Race 6 – Maiden Handicap 1600m
None of these are stars and WINDUPGIRL (16) has shown improvement at her past two outings running on to place at Ipswich and Gold Coast. By Puissance De Lune she has been given plenty of time but this big track will suit and she will be strong late. Trained by Des Trindall and ridden by Vishan Venkaya there is nothing flash about her but this might be her race.
Barry Baldwin-trained RATIONS (9) improved to place last start behind the smart She’s At Regatta and has less convictions than most of these. Now third-up she will get a good run from gate two and just has to run out the 1600m to be hard to beat.
INCENTIVISE (5) dropped out sharply when a beaten favourite at Toowoomba last start over 1850m and the blinkers come off. Steve Tregea’s horses don’t often miss and over the shorter trip with Anthony Allen from a good gate he could make amends.
ARISE MY SON (11) showed improvement to place at Doomben over 1350m in a stronger maiden than this. Fitter for four outings he can go forward with Sean Cormack and be hard to pass.
Jack Duncan’s horses always save their best for the Sunshine Coast. MASO (4) has only had the one outing and failed badly despite support. He returns after being gelded, his recent trial was strong and he has found a weak race. Watch for support.
Betting strategy: Taking a punt on WINDUPGIRL (16) with one unit win and 2 units place.
Race 7- Benchmark 58 Handicap 1800m
Some battlers in this but the Steven O’Dea trained three-year-old GINJA (2) may have more upside than most. Lightly raced, he has won once and finished in the top four at his four outings this preparation. He ran on well over this trip last start to be runner-up in a 0-60 Handicap on a heavy (10) and with Baylee Nothdurft staying aboard can go one better.
CONSULAR (5) gets plenty of racing but was only just beaten by the handy Deep Scieva last start over 1600m. He can go forward with Adin Thompson and defy them to run him down.
ROUND OF APPLAUSE (3) copped some tightening and protested unsuccessfully when a beaten favourite at Beaudesert over 1650m. This extra distance on a bigger track should suit and Brian Pengelly can have him in the box seat throughout.
BOFORS (1) has now had three outings for Stuart Kendrick since coming North and wasn’t far away over 1400m in a Benchmark 65 last start. He will find this easier and with the 1.5 kg claim for Kyle Wilson-Taylor just has to handle the 1800m journey.
INSTRUMENTS (4) fought on well to be runner-up here in similar class last start. He is poorly drawn but goes well at this track and will benefit from Jaden Lloyd’s claim.
Betting strategy: A moderate group. No bet.
Race 8- Class 2 Plate 1000m
Several of these are capable in Saturday grade none more so than MISS CANADA (16) which resumes for Kris Lees and brings strong Sydney form for a Class 2 plate. At her most recent outing she ran in a Group 2, showing pace before weakening and two starts prior placed at similar level in the 1200m Silver Shadow Stakes behind Dame Giselle. Lightly raced with one win and four placings from eight starts she only needs to bring that form to win this.
THE MOVE (5) has had two starts this time in finishing fourth both times the most recent behind the talented Weona Smartone in a Saturday Class 3 Plate where he showed speed before fading late. He is enigmatic but this is a drop in class and Michael Rodd can get the best out of him.
WRITTEN WITH EASE (11) is resuming for Stuart Kendrick on his home track. She produces her best efforts when fresh and has the speed to be prominent.
Betting strategy: A race in two but both are unpredictable and I will stay out
Race 9 – Class 4 Handicap 1000m
At his last outing before a spell FUJI FLYER (1) won a Class 4 Plate at Gold Coast over 1300m with 57.5kg. He now resumes on the back of two good trials, has been successful first-up previously and 1000m with 60kg won’t deter him. With Michael Cahill to ride he gets the gun run from gate three and will be hard to beat.
DERULO (9) is resuming after a change of stables and has benefited from a recent trial. He struggled in Saturday class last preparation but his earlier North Queensland form keeps him under notice.
BLUEANT (8) was too speedy in a Class 2 here over this trip last start. This is harder but he drops 2.5kg and should be prominent.
AQUAJAK (12) is resuming, trained here and has a good first-up record. With Steph Lacy to ride he can be on the speed for a long way
DYNAMIC VERSE (7) found the class too strong at the Gold Coast but is better suited on his home track in this class. All four wins have been at this trip and he will run on for Steph Thornton.
Betting strategy: 3 units on FUJI FLYER (1) to win
BEST BET: FUJI FLYER (Race 9 No 1)
NEXT BEST: VIENNA EXPRESS (Race 1 No 2)
VALUE BET: WINDUPGIRL (Race 6 No 16)
Quaddie numbers are:
Race 6: 9,11,16
Race 7: 2,3,5
Race 8: 5,16
Race 9: 1,9
