Sydney hoop to ride Splintex in Doomben 10,000

Riding high from a Hawkesbury treble on Saturday, Sydney jockey Josh Parr is now planning to put a Queensland Group 1 raid on his radar later this month.

A date with the Mark Newnham-trained sprinter Splintex is set to bring in-form hoop north for the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 on May 15.

Newnham is chasing a Group 1 with his talented son of Snitzel and the stallion prospect is a $13 chance with to win the sprint feature.

Splintex is already a Group 2 and Group 3 winner but a hat-trick of major wins would make him a valuable breeding commodity in the not too distant future.

Parr piloted Splintex in his Group 3 victory as the pair claimed the Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on All Aged Stakes day.

The Sydney hoop was keen to continue his partnership with the four-year-old in Queensland.

“I think the 1200m is the right trip for him and with the right run he proved what he can do there at Randwick last start,” Parr said.

“He deserves a shot at the Group 1 and this looks like a nice race for him.”

Parr has been riding in sensational form in recent weeks including piloting a winning treble at Hawkesbury on Saturday with wins on Steely, Luncies and in the Group 3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup on Archedemus.

Parr will also ride emerging Bjorn Baker-trained two-year-old Overpass when he travels to Brisbane for the Winter Carnival.

The son of Vancouver was a smart winner at Warwick Farm last Wednesday and is being set for the $250,000 Group 2 Champagne Classic (1200m).

“He looks to be a progressive type,” Parr said.

Parr will miss the transferred Scone meeting at Rosehill, which is headlined by the $300,000 Inglis 3YO Guineas, to ride in the Sunshine State.
