Trainer Kris Lees trio hunts Furious Stakes upset at Royal Randwick

Trainer Kris Lees concedes he’ll field a team of outsiders in Saturday’s Group 2 Furious Stakes (1200m) at Randwick — but he’s not discounting the chances of any of his promising trio.

Lees saddles up three fillies in the three-year-old feature with last start winner Chianti joined by stakes performers Redoute’s Image and Miss Canada.

All three fillies are double digit odds in betting in a market dominated by Group 2 winners Hungry Heart and Dame Giselle.

Lees agrees that the top two in the market are the horses to beat but believes his fillies can be a factor in an open fillies crop in 2020.

“They are three nice fillies and are probably outside chances but there is no standout filly yet although one might come,” Lees said.

“The fillies seem to be a bit inferior to the colts at this stage so I think it’s certainly a worthwhile exercise to go to this race.

“It wouldn’t surprise me to watch any of them run really well.”

Lees tested Chianti in the Group 2 Percy Sykes Stakes at the end of the autumn but the Coolmore-owned filly battled at her first attempt in stakes grade.

He took the valuable daughter of I Am Invincible to Hawkesbury for a quick kill in a Class 1 first-up this preparation and Chianti produced to boost her record to two wins from three starts heading into the weekend.

“She has got the soft draw in barrier one off the nice confidence building win,” Lees said.

“She is two from three with a fair bit of upside so she might be our top seed but there is not a lot between the three of them.”

Miss Canada and Redoute’s Image come through the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes from a fortnight ago, won by Dame Giselle, finishing third and fourth respectively.

“It was a really good run the other day from Redoute’s Image but it is just a shame she is drawn wide again (barrier 11) so will probably get a similar run,” Lees said.

“She will need some tempo so hopefully that transpires.

“Miss Canada probably surprised me how well she went after blowing the start in the same race.

“It was probably a blessing in some ways because she switched off rather than leading so took some benefit out of it and should acquit herself well again.”

Nash Rawiller rides Chianti, Brenton Avdulla pilots Redoute’s Image while Rachel King links up with Miss Canada.
