Waller stable: talented filly picture of Elleegance

Erratic but gifted filly Verry Elleegant may have left her wayward ways behind, the Chris Waller stable says.

Waller’s racing manager, Charlie Duckworth, says the stable is thrilled with what it has seen as the ATC Oaks winner builds fitness for her return to racing.

The rising four-year-old will resume in the 1400m Winx Stakes at Rosehill on August 17.

“At this stage she’s been perfect in her work. There’s no sign of her reefing and tearing in her work, so we’re hoping that’s all behind her,” Duckworth said.

“She’s a lot stronger than last preparation and her behaviour is outstanding. Her manners are much better.”

Despite her trait of hanging, Verry Elleegant has built an imposing record of six wins and three placings in 11 starts.

Last autumn when she was transferred from disqualified trainer Darren Weir to Waller’s stables she had four starts beginning with a first-up second at Flemington in The Vanity Stakes.

She then went to Sydney and won the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes before taking out consecutive Group 1 races the Vinery Stud and the Australian Oaks.

Duckworth said the Cox Plate was the likely target for her but they would be guided by how she was going.

Duckworth said it was a possibility Verry Elleegant could campaign in Melbourne earlier than planned with the announcement last week of the $1 million bonuses for the Cox Plate if they won one of the selected lead-up races.

Verry Elleegant is an $11 chance for the Cox Plate with TAB fixed odds.
