Gary Cohen’s chili was running hot Monday night.
Cincinnati is famed for a few things: its sports teams, Jon Moxley and Skyline Chili. A few of these things are objectively great — but not Skyline Chili, the Mets broadcaster said.
Cohen offered play-by-play on a video of a Skyline Chili 5-Way platter being made during the Mets-Reds matchup — that’s spaghetti, beans, chili, chopped onions and about 2 pounds of shredded cheese, if you’re keeping score at home — and had some pretty inflammatory comments on Cincy’s “local delicacy” and its “disgusting chili gravy”
A small snippet of the discussion:
Cohen: “… And this is supposed to be food that you actually eat. Ronnie, Ronnie — have you ever had Skyline Chili?”
Darling: “I have not, I have not.”
Cohen: “I would recommend … you need to try everything once. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Try it once, and then you’ll never eat it again.”
In Cohen’s defense, among regional foods, Skyline Chili never seemed to be high on the totem pole of must-have offerings. Not like Chicago-style pizza or Kansas City barbecue.
Cohen’s incendiary words are only the third-hottest thing to come out of Cincinnati on Monday night: The Mets and Reds were locked in an extra-innings shootout, with New York outlasting Cincinnati in a 15-11 victory.
Someone get this man a New York slice.
