Illinois shades Nebraska following blowout win: ‘Thanks for bringing back B1G football’

Illinois celebrated a 41-23 road victory over Nebraska on Saturday by throwing some shade at its opponent on social media.

"Good game Nebraska," a tweet from Illinois Athletics read. "Thanks for bringing back B1G football."

The tweet — which was later deleted — references the Cornhuskers program being outspoken during the summer and early fall about the desire to play football despite the coronavirus pandemic, even threatening to play games outside the Big Ten Conference when the league originally chose a fall shutdown back in September.

The Illini's victory improved the program to 2-3, while Nebraska fell to 1-3 on the season. Illinois hadn't won in Lincoln, Nebraska, since 1924.

Illinois quarterback Brandon Peters, who had been out since Oct. 24 because of a COVID-19 outbreak on the team, threw for one touchdown and ran for another.

Nebraska coach Scott Frost told reporters after the game: "I didn't really see this coming. I was embarrassed by our level of execution in all three phases. It was almost like our team thought, 'We won one game, we're good."
