The first game of the post-Clay Helton era at USC got off to a rough start.
The Trojans went three-and-out on the first drive of the game, but with 12:56 left in the first, starting quarterback Kedon Slovis got sacked on third-and-12 and laid on the turf before getting tended to by trainers and walking off the field under his own power.
BENDER: 10 candidates to replace Clay Helton
Though that was potentially encouraging for the USC signal caller, he was replaced with freshman Jaxson Dart on the following drive.
Dart compounded things and made them worse for the Trojans, squandering early momentum and throwing an interception on his opening drive from the Washington State 38.
In 20 career games, Slovis has 50 career touchdowns, 5,902 total yards and has completed 69.5 percent of his passes.
He also garnered First Team All-Pac-12 honors last year and was named the conference’s freshman of the year in 2019.
