Saints wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders was well aware of the number of catches he needed on Sunday to trigger a $500,000 bonus in his contract.
When he hauled in his eighth reception of the contest — and 60th of the season — against the Panthers, he raised his arms in the air in celebration. Fox’s TV broadcast had been prepared to announce the milestone, but Sanders reacted before it could be brought up.
Mark Schlereth and Adam Amin were quite amused by the sequence, which also included Sanders making a money gesture.
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with chasing the change as an NFL receiver. What’s good for the pass catcher is almost always good from the team. And Sanders has been a great veteran addition in New Orleans this year. He passed the 700-yard mark against Carolina, making it six out of the past seven seasons reaching that number.
The Saints are playoff bound despite a campaign ravaged by injuries to key players. Michael Thomas and Drew Brees have each missed extended time. Brees is back, but Thomas is currently on the injured reserve list with an ankle problem. Sanders will be asked to take on a larger role as long as Thomas is out, and so far, he’s doing a good job of meeting those expectations.
