Chances are that if you know someone named Taysom, you’re familiar with Saints quarterback Taysom Hill. His first name is extremely unique and was rarely heard before his college football career began at BYU.
But since that day nearly a decade ago, there has been a spike in the baby name “Taysom.” It was once ranked as the 7,839th most popular name in the United States. Now, it is coming close to cracking the top 1,000.
That is thanks in large part to Hill. His performance as a solid college quarterback and a do-it-all weapon for the Saints has undoubtedly led to the rise in the name’s popularity, and he has been told that he is the namesake over several children.
“It’s an honor that someone would look up to you in a way where they would do that,” Hill told NOLA.com.
But where did the name first come from? And what does it mean? Here’s how Taysom Hill’s unique name came to be.

From where did Taysom Hill get his name?
Taysom Hill’s mother, Natalie, told NOLA.com that there’s “not a great story” behind Taysom’s name. As she explained, she got it from the name of a now-defunct Taysom Construction company that was local to their hometown of Pocatello, Idaho.
“We just heard that a lot,” Hill said, per NOLA.com. “It was different and there wasn’t anybody else named that.”
Why was “Taysom” the name of that company? Apparently, it was the last name of the company’s founders, but the Hills liked it enough to choose it as their son’s name.
The name fit the goal the Hills had in choosing their son’s name, as NOLA.com explained.
[Natalie] and her husband, Doug, wanted an uncommon name with two syllables for their son because Hill is such a short and common last name.
Taysom was certainly unique. In fact, the name was exceedingly uncommon until Hill stepped onto the scene at BYU. Then, its popularity began to rise.

The name caught steam again in 2019 as he emerged as a versatile weapon for the Saints. Its rise has continued as he established himself as an NFL role player and battled Jameis Winston for the Saints’ starting quarterback job in wake of Drew Brees’ retirement.
