USC, seeking ‘change in leadership,’ fires Helton

USC has fired football coach Clay Helton, athletic director Mike Bohn announced in a statement Monday.

Donte Williams, who served as the Trojans’ cornerbacks coach and defensive pass game coordinator, was named interim head coach.

“As I committed to upon my arrival at USC, during the past two off-seasons we provided every resource necessary for our football program to compete for championships,” Bohn said in the statement. “The added resources carried significantly increased expectations for our team’s performance, and it is already evident that, despite the enhancements, those expectations would not be met without a change in leadership.”

Helton took over as head coach of the Trojans in 2015 and leaves the program with a 46-24 record.
