Fernando Alonso agrees with Max Verstappen’s Lewis Hamilton theory which Russell proved

Mercedes-AMG announce Project ONE with Lewis Hamilton

Max Verstappen famously claimed 90 per cent of F1 drivers could win the Drivers’ Championship if they had Lewis Hamilton’s car and Fernando Alonso has seemingly agreed with the Red Bull star. Alonso is set to return to motorsport’s premier competition next year following a two year break.

The Spaniard will drive alongside Esteban Ocon for French manufacturer Renault.

It is highly unlikely Alonso will be battling at the front of the grid as Mercedes have dominated the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships for the past seven years.

“Hopefully we can fight Lewis quickly, not next year but soon,” Alonso said following testing this week.

Red Bull are set to be the Silver Arrows’ main competitors again with Verstappen leading their charges.

Hamilton will be gunning for his eighth world title to take him clear of Michael Schumacher’s record.

Earlier this year Verstappen poured cold water on Hamilton’s success by claiming any F1 driver could win the Championship with his Mercedes.

“I have a lot of respect for what they’ve achieved. I’m not frustrated about Lewis in a Mercedes car,” the Dutchman said.

“To be honest. Nothing against Lewis, he’s a great driver, but the car is so dominant.”

Williams ace George Russell, who had not scored a single point all campaign, went a long way in proving that theory right when he stepped into Hamilton’s car at the Sakhir Grand Prix.

The 22-year-old led for the majority of the race and was only denied the first win of his career because of a botched double-stacked pit stop and a late puncture.

Russell’s performance has led to questions about how many other youngsters would do so well with a Championship-winning car.

And two-time world champion Alonso agrees with Verstappen that part of Hamilton’s success comes from his equipment.

“I think a lot of people can win a Grand Prix with that car and they can win Championships with that car,” he said.

“That does not mean anything bad about Lewis.

“When you have that opportunity, you have to perform and Lewis is doing better than anyone else. That is his real value.”

Alonso added: “Renault has achieved three podiums in 2020, I would like to improve on that.

“I think we have the talent, the factory and the ambition to fight for the World Championship.”
