Sebastian Vettel mocks Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari rumours as Mercedes star linked with exit

Sebastian Vettel laughed off suggestions Ferrari are looking to replace him with Lewis Hamilton in 2021. The pair are both heading into the final 12 months of their respective contract and could be on the move thereafter.

Ferrari chief Mattia Binotto teased making a move for Hamilton in Abu Dhabi over the weekend.

Six-time world champion Hamilton then refused to deny he had held secret meetings with bosses of the Italian team.

Even Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff explained there was a “25 per cent” chance the Brit could join the Prancing Horse.

And Vettel mocked the speculation by claiming it must already be a done deal.

“I think he’s already a Ferrari driver. No? So no change,” he joked.

“I think he’s a good customer. He owns more than one.”

Vettel’s contract is no expected to be extended beyond 2020 because he has failed to win the Drivers’ Championship since joining Ferrari from Red Bull in 2015.

And the German joked he would spend the 2021 season on holiday because the media have already written his career off.

“Holiday, I think I was already doing a holiday next year,” he said.

“I heard before that I’m stopping.

Meanwhile, Hamilton confirmed he was considering joining Ferrari after winning the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

“I love where I am so it is definitely not a quick decision to do something else but it is only smart and wise for me to sit and think of what I want if it is the last stage of my career,” he said.

“I want to keep winning, and I want to be fighting with these guys. I cannot tell you what is going to happen moving forward.

“For many years I have never ever sat down and considered other options because we have been driving straight ahead on to the path and journey we have been on.

“We are still on that path and there is very little that is going to shift that. But I know Toto is looking at his options, in terms of his future, and only he will know what is the best thing for him and his family.

“So, I am waiting to see what he is doing with that.”
