NTSB releases report on Dale Earnhardt Jr. plane crash

The National Transportation Safety Board has released its preliminary report on the crash that destroyed Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s private jet last week at a small Tennessee airport.

Earnhardt, his wife Amy, and their daughter Isla suffered minor injuries when the plane veered off the runway and burst into flames after landing at Elizabethton Municipal Airport last Friday afternoon.

The NTSB report largely confirms initial statements by investigators last weekend, noting that the Cessna Citation Latitude bounced twice as it attempted to land before finally crashing down on its third contact with the ground.

According to the report, airport surveillance video showed the plane’s right main landing gear collapsed shortly after the final touchdown, leading part of the right wing to hit the ground.
