Angry Muller snaps in interview as Bayern Munich embarrassed in German Cup upset

Bayern Munich were dumped out of the German Cup by 2.Bundesliga side Holstein Kiel on Wednesday night.

The European champions defeat on penalties was further exacerbated as Thomas Muller lost his cool with a reporter post-game, while it left Karl-Heinz Rummenigge embarrassed after comments he had made earlier in the day.

Bayern haven’t been at their best under Hansi Flick so far this season, and their defeat – and subsequent earliest exit from the DFB Pokal in 20 years – is the culmination of their sloppy recent form.

Die Roten have only lost four of 23 games this term – and indeed, only four under Flick since he took charge in November 2019 – but they were stunned by Borussia Monchengladbach at the weekend, as Marco Rose’s side surged from 2-0 down to win 3-2 in their Bundesliga showdown.

They’ve conceded 24 goals in 15 league games so far, regularly being forced to come from behind to win.

And while Wednesday night was something of a role reversal, with them actually taking the lead twice, they ended up going home with back-to-back defeats for the first time under Flick's stewardship.

Things started well with Serge Gnabry’s 14th minute opener, but that was cancelled out by Fin Bartels before the break.

Leroy Sane’s brilliant free kick had looked set to be the winner in the snowy conditions in northern Germany, but Hauke Wahl struck in the 95th minute to take the game to extra-time and ultimately penalties.

Both teams were successful with their first five spot-kicks before Marc Roca missed Bayern’s sixth effort from 12 yards, allowing Bartels to hand the home side victory.

“It’s a shock,” said Flick. “We are extremely disappointed.”

The defeat was particularly embarrassing for Rummenigge, the club chairman, who earlier in the day, speaking to FCB.TV, had called for Champions League reform “because it is starting to get a bit monotonous."

Nothing like losing to second tier opposition in the cup to break up the monotony.

Post-game, a frustrated Thomas Muller fumed at the interviewer for German broadcaster NDR .

As Valeska Homburg asked the former Germany international about the mood in Bayern’s dressing room after the loss, she briefly laughed, an angry Muller replied: “What do you think? You are laughing here now.”

She attempted to clarify that she hadn’t been laughing at Bayern, but Muller quickly intervened: “Of course you laughed.

“The mood is what you would expect. We are of course down, you can of course imagine that. That the mood is not good.”

Bayern will look to dust themselves down when they meet Freiburg in the league on Sunday.

Despite not being at their awesome best this term, they're still currently two points clear of RB Leipzig.

But improvement is certainly required.
