Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta made it clear he was not happy with some of his players during the 1-0 defeat Manchester City on Sunday. Arteta rang the changes as Pep Guardiola’s flying side visited the Emirates. There were five alterations to the starting XI from Thursday’s Europa League last-32 draw with Benfica.

Arteta changed his centre-back pairing, with Rob Holding and Pablo Mari replacing David Luiz and Gabriel.

Nicolas Pepe also came into the side in place of Emile Smith Rowe.

And it was the incoming trio who Arteta clearly was not satisfied with in the opening stages.

City took the lead in just the second minute, with Raheem Sterling heading home Riyad Mahrez’s cross.

Shortly afterwards PA journalist Mark Mann-Bryans, who was at the Emirates, tweeted about Arteta’s touchline behaviour.

And it was Mari, Holding and Pepe who were feeling the brunt of Arteta’s wrath.

Mann-Bryans wrote: “Arteta often barks out instructions but never heard him this vocal.

“Sat just over his shoulder and he has been constantly guiding Mari and Holding since kick-off. Pepe, too.”

Holding has been a regular for Arsenal this season, though sat out of the last two matches against Leeds United and Benfica.

Mari played a number of games at the turn of the year as Arsenal’s form picked up.

However, the match against City was his first in over a month due to a calf injury.

Pepe has been in and out of the Arsenal side as he continues to underwhelm following his club-record arrival 18 months ago.

Arteta stated earlier this week that he is starting to see the best of the Ivory Coast international.

“The fact that we have the Europa League gave the opportunity to almost everyone in the squad to be fit and available and compete for their place,” said Arteta.

“[Pepe] has had some really good matches and scored some important goals as well and I think that has helped him for the Premier League form and the recent form that he’s shown.

“I’ve seen a lot of things, in his mentality, the way he approaches every training session, in his understanding of the game as well.

“It’s true that he has patches where he’s played more than at other times. He has had the opportunity over the last couple of months that probably every player has been seeking to have but I think overall there is a lot of progress with Nico.”
