Arsenal could look towards Real Madrid for a touch of creative flair this summer, with a move for James Maddison looking about as tricky as it would be expensive. Los Blancos are reportedly looking to offload 38-cap Spanish international Isco, who is deemed surplus to requirements under Carlo Ancelotti.

In an identical situation to Man Utd target Raphael Varane, Isco has one year left on his deal at the Bernabeu, and the club’s preference would be to offload him this summer before losing him for free in 2022.

Music to the ears of Arsenal fans will be the fact that the player is open to a move away from Madrid, according to AS.

However, it remains to be seen whether he would be content to move to a club which can offer no European football whatsoever for the coming season.

Arsenal’s disappointing eighth-place finish last campaign has certainly made life difficult in the transfer market, with qualified rivals at a significant advantage.

Despite cutting a peripheral figure at Madrid in recent years, pre-season pictures show that the playmaker has returned to action in fantastic shape.

In his mind, this may be to fight for a contract renewal under new boss Ancelotti, although it may instead lure a potential buyer to the negotiating table.

Despite his 30th birthday looming within the next 12 months, reports state that Isco has his eye on a spot in Spain’s 2022 World Cup squad.

In order to win over Spain boss Luis Enrique, who did not take a single Real Madrid player to this summer’s Euros, regular game time is an absolute must.

Isco’s best years at Madrid are behind him, but the diminutive attacker still has bags of talent to bring to Arsenal’s ranks.

The cherry on top of this whole situation for the Gunners is the fact that the 29-year-old would be available for as little as £15million.

That fee pales in comparison to the £60m touted for Leicester’s James Maddison.

Granted, Maddison is five years younger than Isco, but the opportunity to sign such a talent for a quarter of the price cannot go under the radar in north London.

Some will say that the Englishman has the advantage of being proven at Premier League level, but Isco is proven at the highest possible level given that he has banked four Champions League trophies in his cabinet.

The prospect of prising Maddison away from a fellow top four rival also seems like an ambitious move for the Gunners, so a move for Isco makes sense in many ways.

With a complete absence of European football for the coming season and drastic improvements needed, the Gunners must be smart over the coming weeks.
