Arsenal have confirmed the arrival of Martin Odegaard, with the Real Madrid youngster joining on loan.

The Norwegian had been keen to leave the Bernabeu in search for first-team football with the likes of Leicester and Real Sociedad also keen.

But the 22-year-old midfielder arrived in London earlier this week before completing his medical and will wear the No.11 shirt for the Gunners.

Odegaard has made just nine appearances in all competitions this season, but Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was keen to sign him.

And the youngster revealed that the Spaniard played a big role in getting him to the Emirates Stadium.

In his first interview for Arsenal, Odegaard said: "I spoke to him before coming here, of course.

"That was very important for me and he seems like a top manager and I liked his ideas, the way he sees football and also the way he is.

"He gave me a great feeling and that was important for me to come here. He was crucial."

And Arteta also shared his delight at the signing, commenting: “It’s great that we’ve secured Martin to come to us until the end of the season.

"Martin is of course a player that we all know very well and although still young, he has been playing at the top level for a while.

"Martin will provide us with quality offensive options and we’re all excited to be integrating him into our plans between now and May.”

While sporting director Edu added: “We are delighted to welcome Martin to the club until the end of the season.

"I would like to thank everyone at Real Madrid and Martin’s representatives for their collaboration in making this loan move happen.

"Martin is an exceptional talent and we are strengthening our squad by introducing an exciting offensive player to the club for the remaining months of this season.”

He becomes Arsenal’s second signing of the January window, after goalkeeper Mat Ryan arrived on a six-month loan deal.

Odegaard joined Real Madrid just a month after his 16th birthday in 2015, though he has struggled to live up to the hype.

Real Sociedad were keen on re-signing him after his season-long loan last campaign, though Real Madrid were believed to be eager to send him out of Spain.

He registered seven goals and nine assists across 36 appearances on loan at Real Sociedad last season, where he was meant to have another year.

Los Blancos cut short his two-year loan and made him part of their first-team squad, though he has left again just months later.
