Arsenal could sign Manchester United star Jesse Lingard when the transfer window reopens at the end of the campaign. And with swap deals likely to become more common in the post-coronavirus world, the Gunners may feasibly use tactics to get a deal done. So Express Sport will now take a look at four players they could use as bait to land the West Ham star.

Bukayo Saka

Okay, hear us out.

Arsenal, obviously, have a future superstar on their hands in Bukayo Saka – who has sparkled amid a tricky campaign over at the Emirates Stadium.

And while they won’t want to lose the 19-year-old, there have been some rumblings about him potentially being sold to balance the books.

With that the case, a direct swap deal would suit both parties.

Arsenal would be getting the finished article in Lingard. And United, for their part, would be recruiting a player with endless potential.

Nicolas Pepe

Back in the summer transfer window of 2019, United thought about signing Nicolas Pepe.

They ultimately missed out, however, with Arsenal forking out a massive £72million to sign the Ivory Coast international.

Pepe hasn’t lived up to expectations with the club so far, scoring just five Premier League goals this term.

But with United needing a player to go on the right wing, Pepe’s move would actually have a bit of logic to it.

Arsenal would likely jump at the chance to get him off the books and United, finally, may get a solution to their big problem position.

Hector Bellerin

There’s a sense that Hector Bellerin’s time at Arsenal is winding down.

And with United keen to land a right-back to provide competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka, he’d be a good addition to the squad.

Bellerin has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona, particularly in the wake of Josep Maria Bartomeu’s second coming as president.

Yet if he wants to stay in the Premier League, United may be an attractive proposition.

What may stop him from moving, however, could be a fear of being branded as a traitor – just like Robin van Persie and Alexis Sanchez.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Why not?

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang may actually be the perfect player for Arsenal to get off the wage bill given he’s their biggest earner and woefully out of form this term.

Would they really turn down such a glorious opportunity? Think back to Mesut Ozil. A repeat of that situation would be extremely, extremely embarrassing.

United, for their part, would be signing a proven goalscorer.

And that’s something Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood simply aren’t, regardless of their talents.

Merson speaks out on Lingard

Paul Merson thinks Lingard shouldn’t return to United this summer and instead pursue a new challenge elsewhere.

“I don’t see him going back to Man United,” he said.

“He’s gone to West Ham to play football. Now he’s back to loving football, he’s playing. There’s no point in going back to Man United and playing the Carabao Cup games.

“He’s scoring goals and making goals. If I was him I would (go to West Ham). He’s the star man, he gets a lot of the ball there.

“I think it works for him. For me I think West Ham tick the box, I think it’s a great move for both parties.”
