Arsenal ‘negotiating termination of Mesut Ozil’s contract’ with exit imminent

It is understood that Arsenal are negotiating the termination of Mesut Ozil’s contract as he edges closer to a move to Fenerbahce.

Reports this week claim that Ozil is Turkey-bound after agreeing to join Fenerbahce.

Mikel Arteta has done very little to silence those rumours, failing to deny Ozil will leave the club this month and discussing his legacy on Friday.

Reputable Turkish reporter Yagiz Sabuncuoglu is now claiming that Arsenal have begun negotiations to terminate Ozil’s contract, instead of loaning him out ahead of a free transfer in the summer.

It is believed that Ozil will pick up more than £7m if an agreement is met, which would allow the club to stop paying his £350,000-a-week wages.

Arsenal and Ozil’s representatives are due to hold further talks on Saturday to iron out an agreement.

Arteta insisted that Ozil’s legacy would live on at the club, even if he did move on this month without playing again.

“What Mesut has done at the football club is unquestionable and that will stay,” said the Spaniard.

“It doesn't matter if he plays two more games, 10 more games or none.

“I think what he has done is there for the records, the history of the club and his contribution, I think nobody can discuss that.”

Arteta had previously said on Thursday that he hoped Ozil’s future would be settled this month in order for both parties to move forward.

“If something is sorted this month it’s because it’s good for both parties: because it’s good for Mesut and his future and because it’s good for the club,” said Arteta.

“If that’s the case, we will move forward. If it’s not the case, the player will continue here.”
