Arsenal recall striker from loan with Aubameyang unlikely to play again

Arsenal have recalled teenage striker Nikolaj Moller amid mounting speculation that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang might have played his final game for the club.

Moller has been brought back to north London halfway through his season-long loan with Viktoria Koln.

The 19-year-old striker contributed three goals and one assist in 13 appearances for Viktoria, but appears to have been recalled due to a lack of game time for the German third division side.

The Swedish star had made just two league starts since August 15 and is expected to continue his development with Arsenal’s Under-23 side.

He joins Jonathan Dinzeyi, a 22-year-old defender, who has returned to the Gunners from Carlisle United, where he played just three times.

Moller joined Arsenal in October 2020 after impressing while playing for Swedish team Malmo.

While he may still be some way off joining Mikel Arteta’s first-team squad, Moller’s return could spark some movement behind the scenes at Arsenal.

Having another striker at their London Colney training base could prompt Arsenal to rubber-stamp a loan deal for Folarin Balogun.

Balogun has been desperate for more first-team opportunities and is expected to leave the club on loan, with Middlesbrough, Millwall, Swansea and Saint-Etienne all reportedly interested in his services.

The 20-year-old striker has been stuck behind Eddie Nketiah, Alexandre Lacazette and Aubameyang in the pecking order and has made just four appearances for Arteta’s side this season.

Having signed a new long-term contract with the Gunners in April 2021, he is definitely in Arteta’s plans going forward.

That is not the case for Aubameyang, who might have already played his last game for the club.

Aubameyang was stripped of the captaincy by Arteta last month after a disciplinary breach and has not played since and is currently away on Africa Cup of Nations duty with Gabon.

According to theDaily Mail, Arsenal have alerted major European clubs to his availability as they look to move on from the 32-year-old.

Aubameyang is under contract until June 2023 and the Mail says his £350,000 per week wages could prove to be a barrier to his departure this month.

Arteta’s treatment of Mesut Ozil could offer a clue to his handling of Aubameyang.

The Gunners boss was happy to leave Ozil on the sidelines until a deal could be reached for him to leave the club, despite the German playmaker’s status at the club and monstrous wages.
