Arsenal transfer chief Edu could hand Mikel Arteta a revitalised squad if he lures in three Gunners targets during the January window. After a poor start to the season, Arsenal are suddenly knocking on the door of the top four as a number of breakthrough stars have contributed towards renewed momentum in north London. Pairing those with prospective new recruits, Express Sport looks at how Arteta could set out his side beyond January:

Goalkeeper: Ramsdale

Eyebrows were certainly raised when Arsenal shelled out £24million to sign Aaron Ramsdale from Sheffield United this summer.

That was partly because he was recruited primarily as a back-up option, but Bernd Leno’s shocking start to the campaign ensured he had an opportunity to impress ahead of schedule.

And that is precisely what he did, showing both the necessary skill and passion to get Gunners fans onside.

Ramsdale is currently in the form his life, and his relentless energy appears to be rubbing off on the rest of the squad.

Defence: Tomiyasu, White, Gabriel, Tierney

Although three new faces could be heading to the Emirates in January, defence is an area not likely to be tampered with.

Despite shipping nine goals in their first three league games this campaign, Arteta’s injury list cleared up, and the likes of Ben White, Gabriel and Kieran Tierney have sured up the back-line since.

Takehiro Tomiyasu has also been superb since his deadline day signing from Bologna, while his versatility as a potential centre-back could also be useful later in the season.

Left-back Nuno Tavares has mounted a strong challenge to Tierney’s position too, so don’t be surprised if Arteta opts to stick with the youngster instead of the Scottish fan favourite.

Midfield: Sterling, Partey, Kessie, Smith Rowe

Shocked and horrified are just two emotions Gunners fans may feel at the thought of Bukayo Saka being dropped to the bench, but Arsenal’s interest in Raheem Sterling may leave them with no choice.

The Manchester City winger is a proven game-changer at Premier League level, and on the opposite flank, Emile Smith Rowe’s recent form has drawn plaudits from numerous respected figures.

In central midfield, Thomas Partey and Franck Kessie could form a formidable partnership if Edu wins the race to lure in the Ivorian from AC Milan.

With his contract due to expire at the end of the season, there are a number of clubs courting Kessie, but this kind of transfer ambition could be what sways him towards the Emirates.

Attack: Aubameyang, Vlahovic

Though it would not exactly be the classic combination of little and large, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Dusan Vlahovic could forge a dangerous partnership of pace and strength.

The Fiorentina man is wanted by both the Gunners and local rivals Tottenham, although reports indicate that a £68million fee has already been thrashed out between Edu and Fiorentina.

Alexandre Lacazette has been in fine form of late, but his ongoing contract stand-off is likely to see him gone by the end of the season, if not in January.

Aubameyang remains Arsenal’s first port of call when it comes to goals, and a partnership with Vlahovic could make fans’ mouths water.
