Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has offered his thoughts on Liverpool signing Thiago.

The Gunners take on Liverpool twice over the next six days in both the Premier League and then the Carabao Cup, and the Spaniard looks set to start in the first of those meetings.

The 29-year-old was a seamless addition to the side that beat Chelsea last weekend, breaking a passing record having come off the bench for Jordan Henderson at the break.

Arteta has now hinted that he would have liked to bring Thiago to the Emirates, noting his 'incredible' personality.

"We don't discuss the things that we try to do in the market," Arteta said.

Before adding when asked about the player: "Yeah, I really like him from my time that I was in Barcelona as well.

"A player with incredible personality, great talent, very special qualities to play in midfield. I think he's a great signing for Liverpool."

Jurgen Klopp hinted on Friday that he would hand Thiago his first start for the club on Monday, having revealed that captain Henderson will not be fit to play a part.

When asked about the his plans for the midfielder, he said: “We will see, we will see.

“We have a few days to train, some boys have to recover from last night, so we will see how we set up against Arsenal.

“I have an idea, but why should I make the decision today when we have time until Monday?

“But he is in contention, for sure. Yeah, let’s see.”

Arteta said when asked about the tough double clash at Anfield: “It's normally difficult enough to play the same team in four days and for the players as well to adapt.

“The first game has a big impact on the second one and it's very tough to beat the same opponent twice in that short period.

“When you talk about Liverpool that challenge is much bigger. I just want to focus on Monday.

“Let's try to get the best possible preparation against them, go there and most importantly have the belief that we can go there and win.”
