Atletico star Saul Niguez speaks out on Manchester United transfer rumours

Atletico Madrid midfielder and long-time Manchester United target Saul Niguez admits he is ‘very flattered’ by rumours linking him with a move to Old Trafford.

The Spaniard enjoyed another strong campaign last season, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reportedly considering making an offer – though the Red Devils ultimately signed Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek.

United legend Rio Ferdinand has long pushed for United to sign Saul, previously describing him as a ‘very, very good player’ that could bring a host of much-needed qualities to his old club’s midfield.

Now Saul has addressed United’s interest and says he appreciates being linked with such a big and historic club, while he was also grateful for Ferdinand’s remarks.

Asked how he reacted to rumours of United’s interest, and Ferdinand’s praise, Saul told Marca: ‘Well, honestly, very well.

‘I am very flattered that a club like Manchester United, or other teams that ask about me, take me into consideration. For me it is very positive.

‘And important people from those clubs [such as Ferdinand] speaking well of me means that I am doing things well at Atletico Madrid.’

Probed on whether Atleti’s hierarchy had any reason to be nervous when such rumours and compliments surface, Saul added: ‘I think not, and [those feelings] have never been transmitted to me from the club.’

United’s interest in Saul is likely to have ended with the signing of Van de Beek, with Solskjaer now looking to prioritise new additions in other areas of the pitch.

The Norwegian coach remains eager to bring in a new right winger with Jadon Sancho still his top target despite talks with Borussia Dortmund stalling, while the club have also been linked with a new backup striker and a left-back.
