Barcelona stars have to flee from rival fans after title celebrations turn sour

Barcelona's stars fled the pitch from invading Espanyol fans after celebrating clinching the La Liga title in front of the relegation-threatened rivals.

Xavi's side were crowned champions of Spain after beating their neighbours 4-2 in their own stadium. They proceeded to celebrate wildly on the pitch, with the players and staff forming a massive ring and dancing around the centre circle.

Unsurprisingly, that riled up the home supporters who had stayed behind after the final whistle. Some of them breached security and charged towards the Barca contingent to confront them.

At that point the Barcelona players wisely headed for the tunnel, narrowly avoiding what could have been very ugly scenes in Cornella de Llobregat.

Many footy fans felt they'd brought it on themselves, with one tweeting: "They got what was coming lmao." A second wrote: "I don't blame the fans, good for them!"

"How about not celebrating on an opponents turf," commented a third, while a fourth questioned: "They couldn't wait til they got to the dressing room?"

And a fifth argued: "Oh aye, yeah. Just crack on doing Ring a Ring a Roses on the pitch of the club you share a city with who are facing relegation. P****s. Deserve to get chased off."

Barca dominated the league this season and have wrapped it up with four games to spare, having opened up a 14-point gap on rivals Real Madrid. They did it in style on Sunday (May 14) evening.

A brace from Robert Lewandowski as well as goals from defenders Alejandro Balde and Jules Kounde put them four ahead. Javi Puado and Joselu scored late consolations for the hosts, who sit four points from safety.
