Barnes: Sarr would be a 'fantastic' long-term addition at Liverpool

Liverpool legend John Barnes heaps praise on Ismaila Sarr and says he would be a ‘fantastic’ long-term addition to squad… but a centre back ‘should be the priority’ for Jurgen Klopp in the January transfer window

  • Liverpool are top of the Premier League table, but only on goal difference
  • John Barnes has had his say on his former side’s January transfer window
  • He says Watford’s Ismaila Sarr would be ‘fantastic’ but Reds need a centre back
  • Virgil van Dijk is a long-term absentee and Reds have dropped more points

John Barnes believes Ismaila Sarr would be a ‘fantastic’ long-term addition to Liverpool but has implored his old side to make a centre back their January priority.

The Reds are still top of the Premier League table but have enjoyed far less success than last season, perhaps in part due to the long-term injury suffered by star centre back Virgil van Dijk.

While a centre back is being looked at, the champions have also been linked with Watford attacker Ismaila Sarr… and despite acknowledging that he would be a great signing, Barnes also believes attentions should be focused elsewhere.

When asked if a move for Sadio Mane’s international team-mate Sarr should be made, the former Watford and Liverpool man told BonusCodeBets. ‘Yes, if he wanted to be one of the front three, but, and I’ve said this before, we need a centre back.

‘Although a great player and looking forward he’d be fantastic player to have as part of the team, it’s not what we need at this very moment in time.

‘If they want to sign him as a long-term investment, then I think that’s great. But right now, this very season, we need to strengthen our defence so to find suitable players for this should be the priority.’

Liverpool are 16 points worse off than this time last year, having lost two and drawn six of their 17 matches. In comparison, they had 16 wins and one draw after 17 games of the 2019-20 season.

Van Dijk is expected to be out for the season, and the likes of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho have been regularly moved out of the midfield to plug gaps in the defence.

Given the close Premier League table as it stands, with both Manchester clubs, Leicester and Tottenham breathing down Liverpool’s neck, Barnes admits it will be a tough fight – with one club in particular causing a real issue for Klopp.

Virgil van Dijk is a long-term injury absentee and the Reds have conceded more than 2019-20

‘Although this season is much more unpredictable than the previous one, Man City is most definitely Liverpool’s biggest threat,’ he added.

‘At the moment, Man United can go on top of us if they get a point, but I think over the season, and of course we’re not even halfway yet, a lot can happen and I do think it’ll end up being Liverpool and Man City battling it out.

‘Liverpool still terrify teams when they pour forward and they very much got that winning mentality in mind.

‘And if you go to the bookies, they’re not going to tell you that Man United are favourites. They’re going to say Liverpool and City are still the two favourites and, in my opinion, they very much are.’
