Interim Manchester United boss Michael Carrick has brought in Donny van de Beek to his line-up.

While Bruno Fernandes, who has been struggling for form, has been dropped to the bench.

Football guru Fabrizio Romano tweeted: "Confirmed. Donny van de Beek starts and Bruno Fernandes is on the bench for Manchester United vs Villarreal.

"Official lineup: De Gea, Wan-Bissaka, Telles, Maguire, Lindelof, Fred, McTominay, Van de Beek, Martial, Sancho, Ronaldo."

Van de Beek struggled from minutes under former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but he has now been named in Carrick's first starting side for the Red Devils on Tuesday evening.

The Dutchman bagged the final goal of the Solskjaer era as United crumbled during a tough afternoon at Vicarage Road.

Van de Beek was introduced at half-time for the Red Devils for his longest stint on the pitch in the Premier League so far this season.

Before Watford, the 24-year-old had only made two appearances for United in the English top flight.

Van de Beek managed six minutes against Newcastle, in match remembered for the return of Cristiano Ronaldo, and ten minutes against Manchester City as United were played off the park.

Van de Beek arrived in Manchester during the summer of 2020 from Ajax.

At Ajax, Van de Beek had been central to Erik ten Hag's side Champions League run to the semi-finals during the 18/19 campaign.

And his performances convinced United to split with £35million for his services.

However, once the 24-year-old had arrived at Old Trafford he was seldom given opportunities to shine.
