Champions League draw: Liverpool’s best and worst possible opponents

Liverpool are back in the last 16 of the Champions League after cruising through Group D as winners to secure a seeded place in Monday’s draw.

Mohamed Salah made history in the final game of the group stage with his goal in the 1-1 draw with Midtjylland ensuring he surpasses Steven Gerrard as the Reds’ highest ever scorer in the Champions League.

“One record after another,” Jurgen Klopp said on Salah’s record. “I didn’t know he could break his record tonight but I’m pretty sure he is proud of that, he should be. An exceptional player, an absolutely exceptional player. Since we were together he helps the team the way he knows and appreciates the help of the team as well. If it was only the incredible number of his goals it would not be enough to be successful, so thank God others scored a lot of goals as well and made this team successful. But Mo is a very exceptional player. Nobody doubted it but if you need numbers to prove, he delivers that as well.”

Jurgen Klopp’s side were upset at this stage last season when Atletico Madrid pulled off a victory at Anfield in extra-time, so the Reds will be especially determined to advance to the last eight this time around.

The Spaniards finished second in Group A behind holders Bayern Munich, meaning a potential rematch of last year’s last 16 tie is on the cards
