Ched Evans is reportedly suing the lawyers who represented him during his 2012 rape trial in an attempt to recoup the earnings he lost through his wrongful imprisonment.
The Sheffield United player spent two-and-a-half years in prison for being convicted of raping a 19-year-old woman in 2011. A retrial in 2016 later found him not guilty.
According to Sky Sports, Evans believes he was poorly advised by Brabners, the legal firm that represented him in the 2012 trial, and is thus entitled to lost earnings.
If successful in his lawsuit, Evans could be awarded millions of pounds in damages.
The civil case against Brabners is reportedly set for the High Court in April of next year.
A spokesperson for the law firm told Sky Sports: “Brabners put forward a strong defence of the criminal case against Ched Evans following a thorough process and we are vigorously defending our handling of the case.
“We believe the claim for damages is entirely without merit.”
Evans previously pursued lost wages from Sheffied United, whom he played for at the time of his arrest. Under current laws, a person wrongfully convicted can reclaim up to £500,000.
Evans was acquitted of rape two years ago in a highly controversial case. He later returned to Sheffield United and is currently on loan at Fleetwood Town.
