Chelsea fans enjoyed boss Graham Potter’s X-rated message regarding the Champions League, as the former Brighton man has shown the personality that many have been calling for since he made the move to Stamford Bridge. The head coach had come under pressure but three consecutive victories, including against AC Milan to advance to the quarter-finals in Europe, have shown that he may have a future at the club.

The Blues will face one of Manchester City, Bayern Munich, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Benfica, Napoli and defending champions Real Madrid in the final eight and Potter appears to be confident of whoever Chelsea’s opponent will be.

The draws for both the quarter-finals and semi-finals will take place on Friday in Nyon, Switzerland, at UEFA’s headquarters and Potter had a message for the club’s fans at a Chelsea event on Thursday.

After being asked if he had a message for the Chelsea fans, Potter said: “Firstly thank you, because they have been incredibly fair with us. They have stuck with the team, the support we have had has been amazing. We will need them on Saturday, we are going to try and beat Everton, then we’ll take the draw and then we’ll try and win the f****** Champions League.”

Supporters on social media were enthusiastic about Potter showing his personality, after being slammed by several pundits for his interviews. On Twitter, @skrga21 said: “Finally acting like a Chelsea manager – that’s what we wanted.” Another supporter tempered Potter’s expectations, but was pleased with his message for the fans.

“His confidence is growing,” @Seyitann__ wrote. “I don’t expect him to win CL but I like it.” While a third fan was extremely happy to see Potter express himself. @CdcAfric tweeted: “Thats the Mentality we want you potter to have and win. Impart the same to the players and go for it.”

However, not everyone felt that Potter was being genuine. “Why does it looks so unconvincing,” GSL_IV_ said. “Someone definitely wrote him a script and tell him to say it out loud at the press.”

Potter had previously been criticised for not showing a certain attitude in his interviews with the press. Following a 1-0 defeat to Southampton, former Aston Villa striker called for Potter to be sacked after Potter attempted to find the positives despite the loss.

“He should be sacked for that post-match interview,” Agbonlahor told talkSPORT. “‘We’ve had to make some changes because of the Champions League. We’ve had to bring some players in against a settled side, an organised side’. What are you talking about?

“They haven’t got a manager. You’re playing against a team in disarray that can’t get back-to-back wins. And you’re complaining that you had to bring [Mykhailo] Mudryk on, you had to start [Joao] Felix. Are you joking me? Poor Graham.”
