Chelsea may convince Borussia Dortmund into negotiating a deal for Erling Haaland by using Timo Werner as bait, it has been claimed. The Norway international is Thomas Tuchel’s top striker target. But any move to Stamford Bridge is far from straightforward.
Chelsea, like many other big clubs around the world, are huge admirers of Haaland.
And that’s certainly easy to see why, with the 21-year-old scoring a remarkable 40 goals across all competitions last term.
Chelsea have already lost Olivier Giroud, selling the France international to Serie A giants AC Milan for just £2million.
And they could also lose Tammy Abraham, with the striker emerging as a target for both Arsenal and West Ham after falling down Tuchel’s pecking order.
Chelsea, currently, are yet to make a bid for Haaland.

But Eurosport’s Dean Jones, speaking on The Football Terrace podcast, believes they may take Dortmund to the negotiating table if they use Werner as bait.
“I think Chelsea are trying to figure out how else they can get round it [the fee] before they do make an offer of £150million upwards,” he said.
“Because ideally you would look to avoid that.
“Being honest, there aren’t too many players I think would tempt Dortmund into doing it. I actually think the only one that fits in is Timo Werner.
“If you were to offer £100m and Timo Werner, then maybe there’s a conversation to be had there.

“It’s been mooted before and it was knocked back. I was told in March that Werner really didn’t want to give up on this, he didn’t want to be included in any kind of transaction like that.
“Who knows, maybe that’s changed? Maybe Werner would become more open to being included.
“It wouldn’t surprise me if something like that was put forward to make that offer. It was an easy way round it and it would solve a couple of issues.”
Chelsea do, however, have other alternatives should Haaland end up staying at the Westfalenstadion for another year.
Romelu Lukaku is one, with reports recently suggesting lines of communication between the Blues and Inter Milan were ‘hot’.

That said, the Belgium international has regularly insisted he’s happy at the San Siro and not looking to leave for a Premier League return.
Another name Chelsea admire is Tottenham’s Harry Kane.
But they appear to stand very little chance of signing the England international given Daniel Levy’s reluctance to sell to a direct rival.
Meanwhile, Bundesliga expert Jan Aage Fjortoft thinks Chelsea can fund a deal for Haaland by selling three players.
“I still think there is a chance that this could happen,” Fjortoft told ESPN FC.
“If you see it from the point of view of Chelsea, the management of Chelsea, because it’s not like you can always just give a call to [Roman] Abramovich and say ‘we need this money, we need this player’.
“If you have a look at them with Tammy Abraham, Hudson-Odoi, Ziyech – they will probably get, shall we say they will probably get half for Haaland in transfers fees from other clubs? Some desperate clubs at the end of the transfer period.
“So they have players to sell as well, so I think this could be a good business case for them and then we haven’t even started on how much they will be earning from being a Premier League contender and maybe winning the Premier League.
“So I think this is the perfect striker for them.”
