Chelsea could miss out on Erling Haaland forever if Roman Abramovich does not splash out on the Norwegian this summer, reckons former West Ham goalkeeper Shaka Hislop. Chelsea are favourites to sign Haaland if he were to leave Borussia Dortmund in this window. However, Dortmund’s stance is that the Norwegian is not for sale.

Dortmund would want around £150million to sell the 20-year-old.

Haaland has a release clause in his contract of around half that amount, but that doesn’t become active until the summer of 2022.

Hislop believes Chelsea’s best chance of signing Haaland is this year, because not as many clubs can afford him.

The pundit says Chelsea would not be top of the player’s wishlist next summer and the Blues will be left looking to find a striker from elsewhere.

“If you’re Chelsea, absolutely yes, you just keep pushing a little bit more, a little bit more, and continue to test Dortmund’s resolve,” Hislop told ESPN FC.

“Because if Haaland scores 30 goals a season, and you think he will, I see Chelsea being up alongside, really competing for the Premier League title.

“The other side of that same coin, you wait 12 months and he’s available for £75m – I’m not sure Chelsea are top of the list in terms of where Haaland goes.

“As a result, you need a striker to score you goals, how much is that going to cost you? Who is that? There aren’t that many, certainly anywhere near that class, available.”

Meanwhile, Bundesliga expert Jan Aage Fjortoft agrees now makes complete sense for Chelsea to sign Haaland.

“I still think there is a chance that this could happen,” Fjortoft said.

“If you see it from the point of view of Chelsea, the management of Chelsea, because it’s not like you can always just give a call to [Roman] Abramovich and say ‘we need this money, we need this player’.

“If you have a look at them with Tammy Abraham, Hudson-Odoi, Ziyech – they will probably get, shall we say they will probably get half for Haaland in transfers fees from other clubs? Some desperate clubs at the end of the transfer period.

“So they have players to sell as well, so I think this could be a good business case for them and then we haven’t even started on how much they will be earning from being a Premier League contender and maybe winning the Premier League.

“So I think this is the perfect striker for them.”
