Chelsea ready to trigger Gavi’s ‘£42m release clause’ amid Barcelona woes

Chelsea are ready to trigger Barcelona star Gavi's release clause – which currently stands at £42m.

The Blues are keen to take advantage of the fact the midfielder has yet to sign a new contract while Barca's finances are in a wreck.

Their economic situation has already stung them harshly when they could not afford to renew Lionel Messi's contract in the summer, meaning he had to leave for Paris Saint-Germain.

So far, Los Cules have kept the bulk of their squad despite worries that the Argentine's departure could spark a mass exodus.

In fact, club president Joan Laporta has been desperate to keep hold of the young talent that is starting to blossom from La Masia.

But one player is yet to sign a new contract and has been a sensation in recent months – Gavi.

The 17-year-old has had an astronomical rise in football since the season started and already has four caps with Spain.

He has been partnered with another prodigy Pedri in midfield at Barcelona and the duo have drawn comparisons to Xavi and Andres Iniesta.

But Gavi is contemplating whether to put pen to paper over a new deal at the Nou Camp and that has given Chelsea a chance of jumping in.

According to El Nacional, the Blues are keen on snapping up the teenager with the club eyeing new midfielders.

Gavi's release clause stands at £42m at the moment and the Stamford Bridge outfit believe that would be a brilliant investment, considering the years ahead of the youngster.

However, Barcelona remain confident that they can convince the Spaniard to stay in Catalonia to continue to develop alongside the likes of Pedri and Ansu Fati.

They have already signed new contracts this season amid reports they could leave, stating their love of the club as the reason why.

With Barcelona banned from spending money in the transfer window by La Liga, they are becoming more reliant on their academy.

But the upside is that they could spark another golden generation, similar to the one that dominated under Pep Guardiola.

Chelsea, on the other hand, have other targets should they fail to land Gavi.

West Ham star Declan Rice has been tipped to sign but his asking price might rule the Blues out while Monaco ace Aurelien Tchouameni is also in their sights.
