Chelsea set for Christian Pulisic injury boost as Blues confident ace could face Newcastle

Chelsea are confident Christian Pulisic can recover from his hamstring injury in time for their next Premier League game against Newcastle. The news that the winger is winning his fitness battle is a boost for Frank Lampard’s side ahead of the trip to St James’ Park.

Pulisic has missed Chelsea’s last three games after pulling out of the warm-up ahead of last month’s 3-0 win at Burnley.

The 22-year-old has made just three starts in all competitions so far this season and is yet to complete a game, having sustained a hamstring injury in the FA Cup final in August.

The USA star has suffered a series of injury setbacks since joining Chelsea from Borussia Dortmund for £54million in last year’s summer transfer window.

However, he still managed to score 11 goals and notch 10 assists in his first campaign, and Lampard will be delighted by the news he could be fit to face Newcastle on November 21.

The return of Pulisic would give the Chelsea manager a welcome selection headache, with the winger set to rival Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech and Callum Hudson-Odoi for a place on Chelsea’s flanks.

Lampard may also be able to call on Kai Havertz, although the playmaker has not yet joined up with his Germany team-mates during the international break after testing positive for coronavirus.

Havertz is still in London and must wait until he receives a negative test result before he can fly out to join his Germany team-mates.

The 21-year-old tested positive for coronavirus last Monday last week, so could potentially play against Necastle if he tests negative before then.

Meanwhile, USA national team boss Gregg Berhalter is not concerned by Pulisic’s injury issues, arguing that he is just adapting to the demands of the Premier League.

Pulissic has joined up with the USA squad during the international break despite his injuries.

Berhalter said: “I really see it as a young player who is just adapting to the demands of a different game, a different schedule.

“When you get injured, when you have a muscle injury, it takes you a while to get fully fit and recover and this is part of his recovery process.

“I have no doubt that he’s going to be a player that is fit for a very long period of time when he gets through this period.”
