Chris Sutton in furious radio row with journalist over Republic of Ireland views

Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton was involved in a furious row with Irish Times journalist Ken Earlys over Republic of Ireland manager Stephen Kenny.

Ireland's World Cup qualifying campaign is in tatters already after two defeats on the bounce left them bottom of their qualifying group.

A closely-fought 3-2 loss against Serbia was followed up by a dismal 1-0 defeat at the hands of minnows Luxembourg, who are FIFA's 98th-ranked nation.

The two defeats have put Kenny under significant pressure, and Sutton believes previous boss Martin O'Neill deserves more credit for the job he did.

Earlys responded, however, and wasn't worried about getting into a back-and-forth with Sutton.

He said: "Martin O'Neill's record in the last two years…

CS: "Yeah, he got to the Euros. Do you think you'll get to the Euros under Stephen Kenny, Ken?"

KE: "Well, he'll have to be in charge for another year and win in the playoffs after finishing bottom [of the group] in the nations league under Martin O'Neill. We literally finished bottom of the group [under O'Neill], don't think we scored a goal… if we scored it was against Wales, and we managed to get a playoff out of it."
